Re: Oxbridge entrance records for the Grammar schools
It's not the best for many science subjects, Imperial is. It's not the best for some Arts subjects, UCL is......And both are in the top 10. I know quite a few who chose NOT to go to Oxbridge despite 3 A*'s......

In the worlds top 10, only 2 are from UK, Oxf & Camb. Rest are all American.

sbarnes - that is a subjective judgement anyway and is across all degree subjects.
It depends on which degree your child wants to read ...

Yes, my daughter is one of them! We are on the uni application route and there are so many factors - the most important being the happiness of your child. And the child who passes the 11+ is nothing like the young adult making all sorts of choices for themselves.KenR wrote:Quite a number of Kefw students choose not to apply to Oxbridge even though they meet the criteria
Re: Oxbridge entrance records for the Grammar schools
That is true of the THE world rankings, but not of the QS rankings. And as others have pointed out it is not true of all subjects – even the THE rankings have Imperial ahead of Oxford for engineering and technology, for example. In the worlds top 10, only 2 are from UK, Oxf & Camb. Also, while Oxbridge might well be the best overall, they aren't necessarily the best in all subjects. Durham is rated top for history, Nottingham for veterinary medicine, Durham and UCL are rated higher for English Literature, and if you want to work in Formula 1 an automotive engineering degree from Oxford Brookes is the best starting point.
The devil's in the detail…
Re: Oxbridge entrance records for the Grammar schools
DS1 - local GS, predicted A*AAA - quite liked Hertford College on a school trip to Oxford. But he has a very clear idea of what he wants to do and this is not offered at Oxford, so he has not applied there. Having visited severlal universities which do offer the course he wants, he has decided that Southampton will be his first choice. No disagreement from us, nor from the school, which would rather help students found the right course for them than boost its rankings in the 'look how many we got into Oxbridge' league table.

Horses for courses; one mould does not fit all.

No, absolutely one mould does not fit all - which completely contradicts what you are implying above which appears to be Oxbridge or bust - which is, of course, nonsense.sbarnes wrote:Horses for courses; one mould does not fit all.
