Each school has their own published criteria which differentiate's candidates. So, in practice you could have 5 children all on the same score - say 325 - all on the same ranking, but there may only be offers of places for a couple of them (if there is only a couple of seats left!) The decision about which of these gets the place is in accordance with the individual school's published criteria - as rabbieburns suggests, often this is distance from school.

If more than one boy is on the last qualifying score Queen Mary Grammar school will use the following criteria to decide.

If more than one candidate obtains the last qualifying score then priority will be given to any such candidate(s) who are in Public Care. If none of the candidates obtaining the last qualifying score is in Public Care then aggregate positions in the three skill areas will be taken into account and the candidate(s) with the lowest aggregate position will be offered the place(s).

This was from the schools website and their 2014 admissions criteria.

As scores are standardised there will be more and more boys on each of the scores the closer the scores get to 200.

Thank you for reply. Is it correct to assume that all of the boys that scored 325 last year got their place at Qm if it was listed first or would it depend on rankings that are not known to us.

It is more likely there were other candidates on the score who were not offered places. It is conceivable that all candidates on that score were offered places.
Best advise to give is wait for the results and then discuss matters with the admissions officer at the school who will be able to give you much better information if you are on the waiting list.
Good luck.

New to this so hope you don't mind me asking but if some of children who scored 325 for girls school for example and got placed on waiting list and the lowest eventual accepted mark was 309, do those children on waiting list with 325 take places elsewhere hence the last accepted score being lower at 309. (Referring to last year)
Hope that makes sense :|
