How about places only for children from Birmingham or nearby disadvantaged areas, such as chemsley wood or smiths wood, which were part of Birmingham previously....and whose parents are unemployed and were born in the city?
Here you would get local only Birmingham underprivileged children whose families have lived in the city for years, so are Birmingham through and through.
Would that be fair?

Easy, its enshrined in law and is commonly known as "progressive taxation"booellesmum wrote:Ok,enough now with the discrimination. You wouldn't dare discriminate on race, religion, gender so what makes wealth fair game?ABJ wrote:As expected lot of strong response to the topic.
I also want to add to this debate that the prep school children should not be entitled for grammar schools..
If you can afford the fees of prep well you surely can afford for independent school too..

Good things about gramar school entrance exam is that it tell kids that the world out there is a competitive world and they need to compete with the best.
State school has already done enough damage to my DC feeding her brain that she is best (which she is in her whole school not in class) and she don't need to put effort let alone stretch. The so called education specialists / child specialists have already destroyed the generation by taking out competitiveness from them. when they come for uni / job level they have potential but not competitive enough.
The world is becoming single country and it is competition is going global. With many manufacturing units going out of country our kids will not have enough jobs and we are shy from exposing our kids to competitive environment.
In my opinion the situation is already bad enough and we want to make it worse to say reserve it to locals.
There will be 3 outcomes.
First few years local kids will get a place even if they are far below grammar school expected level.
In few years the standard will go down as it wll be just another state school
kids will be below international standard when they come to job market.
Although we live in the geographical boundry so personally it doesn't matter to me but I want my kid to compete and become better rather than get seat under a reservation system where they don't realize what the standard outside birmingham (let alone international standard) is.
