Re: AGS Test Score for each section and age standardised tot
Hi El-Jewel,
Yes we got the strongly encouraged letter and we were fortunate to be offered a place on March 1st. We had friends who got the same letter but didn’t get offered a place. I knew from what I’d read on this forum that he would probably get a place with his score, worst case being off the waiting list, so I could relax a little!
DS is happily settled, has made heaps of friends and seems seems very inspired academically. He also loves all the sport, especially the Rugby which was new to him. Yes, there is plenty of homework but it’s doable and he doesn’t seem to complain much! So far, so good.
I wish you the very best of luck. I know how hard it is but things always work out in the end.

Well done to your DS and thank you for sharing. I wish him the very best in March. I’m yet to hear from CEM about my DS’s score. Few parents who are positive about QM scored around the same. So keep being hopeful. These kids are superstars!UW01 wrote:Got an email from CEM! DS scored 333.84 which seems a little borderline as OOA candidate, from what I've been reading so far. He sat two 11+ tests (including Altrincham Boys - we were considering a work-based relocation at the time). He did say the AG test was considerably harder, especially the maths reasoning questions. His arithmetic is very strong, so I guess he needed more work on worded problems. CEM give a breakdown of raw scores for verbal, maths and NVR and corresponding age standardized scores. So you get a good comparison of performance in each section. My DD got 340 in 2014 and is now at WGHS. My thoughts were AG was a whole lot more competitive, so DS needed to score relatively higher as OOA to secure a place. We've already put AG as 1st choice and QM as 2nd. I guess the anticipation until March hasn't been made any easier. Wishing all others all the best!

Thank you for your kind words. It must a complete relief once they settle into a good place. And it’s good to know he likes the school. I was impressed when we sat the exam.
Yes and I have heard not everyone who gets a strongly encouraged letter gets a place! I remain hopeful.
Re: AGS Test Score for each section and age standardised tot
El-Jewel thank you for your encouraging words! Yes, the boys are superstars. It's amazing how much resilience and determination they've shown. It's not an easy thing to attempt at their age. DS's best freind also sat the test with him. Both are bright boys. Unfortunately, his mother was called back 40 mins into the test. After attempting the first few questions, her son felt he couldn't continue. He was in a terrible state. His mother consoled him, and after agreeing to go back to complete the test, they were told that wouldn't be allowed. The test is also largely to assess how well the child copes and performs under pressure. AG explained "he would struggle with a grammar school education". It was heartbreaking to hear that with the lad standing right there. I'm just glad we're through the most difficult part. Hats off to all the boys though! Let us know how you get on. Got a message yesterday from a friend who lives in Wolverhampton it reads as follows.
"Hi hope you are good.Thought you might be interested to know.Just got .....'s CEM score 306.37 so surprised he got strongly recommend letter.Really virtually no chance of getting in.Not sure why they waste time encouraging him in the letter totally false hope.Perhaps just to fill their boarding places(!).Glad we got score at least we can plan now.I am sure he will be happy at ..............See you soon......."
I would suggest anyone with a strongly encourage letter obtain their child's score as it is clear the range is into the 306 possibly around 300.The score may or may not be disappointing once it has been obtained but at least you as the parent will know how your child has performed and it is useful knowledge for future schooling.

Hi UW01. I will do. What a touching story. Poor thing. I bet He will excel in his academics maybe just not in a grammar school. I’m surprised they didn’t let him back in. This is one experience that will never these children. Truly looking at the number of kids who didn’t make the varying qualifying marks, I am proud of my DS. All the best xxUW01 wrote:El-Jewel thank you for your encouraging words! Yes, the boys are superstars. It's amazing how much resilience and determination they've shown. Hearing this, I think it’s now clear why some children who got the strongly encouraged letter didn’t get a place in previous years. It is important to get the score from CEM then. AG may need to review this policy, to avoid giving parents false hope.quasimodo wrote:Got a message yesterday from a friend who lives in Wolverhampton it reads as follows.

Dear All,
Adams Grammar School are legally required to supply any data held regarding your Child under Subject Access (Data Protection Act). YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WRITE TO CEM Durham University - IT IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT AND THEY ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW.
You can obtain your Childs Score from AG and if they refuse, put them on notice that you will be reporting the matter to the Information Commissioners Office.
You also have a right to report the matter to the Governing body at the Haberdasher Trust.

That's not entirely true is it? There are caveats to releasing information. You may also incur costs.Tonysingh123 wrote:Dear All,

Re: AGS Test Score for each section and age standardised tot
The Information Commissioners Office have advised the School that they are required to disclose any data held in relation to the test when a Subject Access request is made. Refusal to supply such information must have a statutory reason to do so. I can assure you the School does not have such reason. Breach of Data Protection Act can have serious legal consequences - failure to supply the information under subject access would amount to a breach. I have received my sons score directly from Adams Grammar School.
If you doubt this advise you may confirm this information with Karla Bailey caseworker at the ICO. If the school refuses the data please report your concerns to casework@ico.org.uk FAO of Karla Bailey
The maximum fee set in legislation is £10. If you apply to Durham University they will also request a £10 fee however you have no reason to apply to CEM.
