Single sex QMGS and others

Just curious. Is the fact your chosen grammar school a single sex school a positive or negative in your view?

For me, I really would prefer a mixed school. If I lived in an area where the comps were better performing then I would not opt for a single sex grammar. Living in Sandwell (as opposed to say Solihull), the gap between the comps and qmgs is just to big. I weighed it up and decide on balance the quality of education was the most important, and we will find other ways of making sure he interacts with the other half of the human race outside of school. It does seem terribly anachronistic though.

Any thoughts, or experiences from those with boys/girls already in segregated education?

I have a girl at KEHS and a boy at HGS. So far it’s been fine! They mix with the opposite sex on the bus (in my son’s case), on instagram/social media (both of them) and in the adjoining playground areas (my daughter - no girls school next to HGS). My daughter (year 9) regularly meets up socially in mixed sex groups and has plenty of male friends.

They also mix with the opposite sex at church and youth group and on summer camps. My daughter certainly isn’t short of male attention

I’m actually quite glad they can be themselves in lessons and not worry about the opposite sex. I also think a single sex school can adapt its approach to boys/girls. KEHS is very relaxed - I’m pretty sure if my son was there he’d do no work ! I wouldn’t worry about it too much. As long as school isn’t their whole life and they socialise outside of it, they’ll be fine!
