Hi,
I think it will be very difficult for anyone to advise with any degree of certainty how and when the waiting list and by how much it will move this year.I say this for two reasons.Firstly we have all the changes to the catchments to the KE grammars and the impact on neighbouring grammar schools.Secondly the impact of Covid19.
I think you will have to adopt an attitude of hope and wait and see.

In all honesty, that is a lot of people ahead of you. Never say never but it is probably unlikely that 30 people will all turn down one place if it is offered to them - there is a lot of uncertainty this year which probably means that even less people will opt for a private education if they have the offer of a grammar school. And 30 places are ahead of you. Have you been offered an alternative that you are happy with?

I can understand your situation and it is not easy to wait for months. But, you will have to wait and watch...makka wrote:Hi,

First of all, it is quite lot of change with Birmingham Grammar School catchments and secondly, everyone expected the cutoff for Sutton Coldfield Grammar School to go up at least by 3 or 4 points. In reality the cutoff went down by 4 points(Last year: 221 and this year: 217) Have they increased Published Admission Number (PAN)? or have the girls scored less compared to boys? Adding to this, we do not know how many girls are there from 217 to 213 and how many of them listed Sutton Coldfiled school as their top priority. I do not want to confuse you but there are quite lot of unknowns and waiting is the only thing we can do as these details cannot be released due to data sharing restrictions.
Keep checking with the school on waiting list and good luck to your daughter.

Hi Makka,
I remember your post about transport from Burton to Handsworth. For your daughter’s sake I am glad that you are reconsidering the practicalities of the daily commute- I guess Sutton Coldfield is slightly closer?
It seems to be a funny year this year with the waiting lists. Maybe people are holding onto a private school place as well as a place at Sutton Coldfield but having 30 children ahead is quite a large number.
Time will tell, but in the meantime are there any local schools that have space?
I hope everything works out for your family

Handsworth girls had an increase in PAN which may have had an impact. Also, as the CHG and Five Ways scores would be lower than required in previous years this could have accounted for less demand for SCGS.
A movement of 30 places at this point would seem unlikely but don't give up hope, everything is much slower this year.

Re: Sutton Coldfield Girls waiting list
As I know the school hasn’t moved since you applied, I can only assume the transport problem is because the bus or train you were planning on using has changed their route? Or been cancelled? We do try and advise people to have robust plans for travel when they apply, because it is obviously pointless applying to a school that your child has no hope of getting to each day!makka wrote:Hi,

I hope you manage to sort something as, it is possibly unlikely the waiting list will move 30 places, so assume not and if it does, that will be a bonus.
Re: Sutton Coldfield Girls waiting list
A child can’t undertake a daily commute from Burton to Handsworth and remain fresh for effective study. Even if there was a bus, it’s just not feasible with the traffic. My suggestion is try and get a place at a school in Burton or move house.
