Every year there are some that accept GS places which are then no longer required.

Most of these people then decline the school they were originally offered.

However, every year there are some cases where this doesn't happen for the following reasons

1) they don't realise they have to give up old place - assuming it will automatically be done
2) they forget to give up old place
3) can't be bothered to give it
4) still weighing up their options

Those in category 3 are extremely selfish and those in category 4 need to make a decision as soon as possible!

Each year on induction day there are 'no shows' - meaning a child who really wants that school misses out on the induction day due to the selfishness of others.

Last year there was a 'no show' for the first day at CHG!

There seems to be an issue this year with the waiting list movement.

Therefore if you are holding a GS place that you no longer require, or know someone who is holding an unwanted place, please phone or get them to phone FO / LEA and decline these places. (This includes being on the waiting list for a school you know you don't want)

There are people out these desperate for these places, so let's try and get these lists moving.

Let's hope that movement comes soon!

There's also a category for those who have no intention of taking up spaces, possibly just collecting offers because they can.

why does the system allow this to happen year in year out?

Because there isn’t one system. Local authorities do their own thing, people hold an Indie places and a GS, people assume that info is passed on automatically when it isn’T, and there are those who don’t give a stuff about anyone else as long as they get what they want.

Unless you have the good fortune to live in catchment for Thomas Telford (CTC outside the normal application system), or have a not yet actually open Free School in the locality - then you can hang on to two as well as the indie place you will eventually send your DC to .

seems there is a basic flaw in the lack of the system that no one seems to want to address therefore.

Happens every year and is always very sad and frustrating!

I heard (many years ago) of a boy not turning up to CHB on the first day.
On calling his parents they said he wasn't coming to the school.

The HT then called the first on the waiting list, and his parents went to collect him from his school, went to the uniform shop, decked him in the CHB uniform and drove him there!
The whole situation for the poor lad could have been avoided had the parents of the no-show just told CHB in advance!
