Standard scores

Hi All,
This forum is been very useful in our 11plus journey and wish we would have found bit earlier!

I found in the FOI links the highest standard score in year 2017 is 279 but the previous year it was 269.

Do any of the experienced posters here know why the difference? The reason for my question is to work out the cutoffs if the highest std score at all makes a difference with cut offs?

There is no significance in the difference between the highest marks achieved in any 2 years. The reason for this is that the highest mark is an accumulation of very high standardisation scores for each of two papers. It's a characteristic of the standardisation process that scores close to the top (or bottom) of the standardisation range cannot be calculated accurately from a statistical perspective so often a handful of very high scores can sometimes be given the same standarised scores (typically about 140) even though some candidates in this category may have different raw scores (but all very high scoring) - For example a child that scored 95% raw marks in one of the exam papers might quite possibly be given the same maximum standardised score of around 140 as a child who scored 100% raw scores in the same paper.

If you think about the way the admissions criteria works for the Birmingham Consortium, there is no difference for children scoring respective scores of 269 and 279 - both will get into any of the Birmingham Consortium Grammars that they want.
