I have lived in Bucks since I was 7 and my husband & brother both went to JHGS but that was a long time ago. More recently my nephew went to RGS and loved it and excelled so it really does depend on the child.
When my DS went round JHGS he was animated. excited and that sealed the deal !!!
Just about to take my DD round two secondary schools - both have similar pros & cons, one is easier to get to than the other but will be carefully monitoring her reaction at each open evening.
What us parents have to go through.

Take them round on a normal school day - open evenings are only hand-picked children putting on a show
