Help! My daughter is in Year 5 in Bedfordshire. She has said she'd like to sit the transition test and we went to look round Aylesbury High last week. We both liked it, but now she's wavering about sitting the test - doesn't want to leave her friends, not sure about making the long journey every day, etc.

As she's not 100% sure she wants to go for it, we're not sure about tutoring now. Are there resources we can use at home to tutor her before the exam? So that if she sits it, passes but then doesn't want to take up the grammar school place, we won't have spend hundreds on tutoring?

Also, is it possible to pass the 11 plus like this, or not? Is it worth her taking it if she's not 100% sure about wanting to go to grammar? We want her to keep her options open.

Any advice would be really helpful.

Always best to sit and then not take the place. Not sitting can never be undone. I know parents who were so sure they would get a music place they did not sit for the academic place at some schools. They did not get the music place so were left with nothing. Always sit, if anything it is great experience. You have time to DIY , lots of resources on here. DG

Still plenty off time, just use the guidance in this site, buy a few workbooks and see how she gets on, if her heart is not in the right place she will put the brakes on, just like we all do. Start with a maths book and some good quality comprehension that way the work she does will boost her confidence at school too.

Are you the aylesbury side of Bedford? I only ask because we have two friends who's children travel to cottesloe school in wing, from aylesbury and are doing exceptionally well. I have no idea about its ofsted, or results, I do know they have had a shed load of money ploughed into it recently, as every time I visit Milton Keynes there is building work going on.

The girls I know are doing really well though, I was also impressed that one lost her phone at the bus stop recently and it was handed in to school next day....So was her dad!

In relation to the original post please just do a bit of preparation at home and have a go. I honestly believe there is no need for a "tutor" and they don't do anything a good parent can not. The most important thing is that the child wants to do it and the travel is reasonable for an 11 year old. That's where your decision really lies. I would not have done it if my ds had not wanted to. Luckily his school is not too far away. Good luck.

I didn't know phones were female, let alone that they have fathers.
