My DS is SN and got a place in a grammar school, however he passed the exam with flying colours. His special needs (EHCP) plan was transferred across. I really do not think you can ever get a place in a grammar school without passing the 11+!! I stand to be corrected.

Yes that is my interpretation too..though children do sometimes get places at some schools through appeal by showing alternative academic evidence and evidencing often late SEN diagnosis as a mitigating issue...
