Selection review advise

Post by Rheascott77 »

We opened our daughters results on Friday and she scored 115. We were gutted for her as she was so close and wasn't heavily tutored as all the others that passed in her year. She had 4 sessions with an 11+ tutor and we did some prep over the summer holiday. In May this year for the first time she sat a violin exam and her anxiety was shocking. We then spoke to her head teacher and she noted this down. The night before the mock exam her anxiety was awful again, she was crying totally beside herself. Pretty much the same the night before and the morning of the real thing.

So my questions are these

1) We will 100% get Tring School as she has an older sibling that attends. If we go to selective review and don’t win will this loose her place at Tring School?

2) What order do we put down schools? Tring then grammar or the other way around?

3) The main reason for selective review is her exam anxiety. she has no signs of this within her day to day life or in school at all. Or even when she has assessments within the class. She has always been in top sets and in her KS1 she gained 3

Do you think we have a chance at all?

Thanks so much for any help or advise

No you do not risk the place at Tring School - put the GS first on the CAF and then Tring second, you will get Tring on March 1st if you haven't got through review

see above 1 - GS 2 - Tring

anxiety is difficult - problem is that a lot of people will have felt anxious - the key for reviews / appeals is to have evidence of high academic ability

With a score of 115 there is some chance, but not as much as if her score were 120.5.
Are school supportive, were they surprised she did not pass? Head teacher support/reccommendation is very important for selection reviews.

Go and look on the Appeals threads to get an idea of how it works and start your own thread if you want the advice of the very experienced team over there.

It’s good that you have a decent backup: put the GS in place 1 and the non selective in place 2.

Good luck!

We have a 1:1 from the head teacher. Our daughter has always been in top sets, the head teacher is very supportive and we are meeting with her tomorrow

Ask if other 1:1s qualified.

The HT form needs KS1 levels and assessments from Y3, Y4 and Y5 and KS2 test predictions; ideally all need to be great ie above age expectations.
