Post subject:  Distances for out of county applicants who have passed

Hi there

I wonder if anyone could help. We live on the border of Herts and Bucks. Traditionally children from our town who pass the 11+ go to CGS; places are also usually available at AHS or AGS I believe. The CGS catchment has expanded this year and so the out of catchment distance allocation is likely to shrink considerably; it may mean that children in our town are no longer eligible for a place.

I had planned to put CGS first (as it is a lot nearer us) and then AHS as second choice (although both schools are lovely). The question I have is if I put CGS as first choice and no place is available am I less likely to get AHS than if I had put it first initially. One reason for asking is my school has a type of open day for secondary schools and when speaking to the lady at AHS she said that we would be almost certain to get a place if we put AHS as our "first" choice.
Many thanks

Have a look at the section "Equal preference system" in the "schools" menu at the top of the page. It explains the process. In summary, put the schools you want in the order you want them. There is no point trying to play tactics because the schools don't know where they sit on your list. If you cannot be allocated at your first preference, your second becomes the new first preference.

If you are within 15 miles of AHS (straight line distance) then you are fairly certain to get a place there if you put it first or if you put it second and CGS can't accommodate you. So the AHS person was strictly correct.

Which school do you prefer? Put that first and the other second.

AHS and CGS are quite different .... I would say that the Floyd is more similar to CGS.
