Standardised score confusion

Post by Hardworkin' »

My daughter has just received her scores....
English Score 35/50
Mathematics score 13/45
Verbal Reasoning Score 35/80
weighted score of: 294.536
Chelmsford County High School| Total Applicants 679 |
Your Ranked Position 497 | Applicants on your ranked list 679
Looking at previous posts on this forum, I do not understand how a standardised score of 294.5 in comparison to other's scores of 324+ gives her a position of 497?
Please advise-Thanks
:? :?
PS-She comes from a county primary school, having completed no practice papers or benefiting from any tuition. She also said that she had only completed half of the verbal reasoning. Not bad for a first go in my opinion :)

93 out of 509. There were about 40 more entrants last year, which I'm shocked about as I thought numbers would have been higher this year.

that english score is up with the best scores out so far , and the other two papers i would say are a lot more reliant on knowledge of the format of the exam so with no tuition/practice thats a good effort indeed and shows obvious ability for the future

The standardised score goes to three decimal places. this is needed as scores are generally very tight and two points difference may mean tens of places difference. Some places are separated by just the 1/100 of a point.

Your DD did very , very well .
I know 324 sounds close to 295 but 10 children can share a fraction of a decimal...literally
My second daughter had to wait 2 weeks to get a place. She got 345.?? as a standardised score(roughly mid to high 70% in all papers ).On offer day 5 girls with that score of 345.?? got in and 5 did not and what separated them was what was 2 points after the decimal point. So that was less than a third of a percent. It is ridiculous and not a fair reflection of their ability.Plain old luck had its place in all this and it is unfair. :(
It is a snapshot in which putting speechmarks in the English paper can keep you in or out. :( Your daughter did well.Remember it is the top 10 % + that sit the exam soo well done her.
Best wishes to you and your daughter.

great support :)

Thank you for your support and advise. It is a shame that the 11+ is geared towards those fortunate children whose parents have either paid for their private schooling and/or tuition. Our family situation has meant that I have been unable to give that financial support and family bereavement has taken the time which may have been useful for practising at home.

Offered WHSG with a ranking of 147 in the "out of borough list". Hopeful she may get Colchester (ranked 163) through the clearing system. From previous posts 179 - not offered: 149 - offered.

DD is the 3rd child through this process. All I can say is that each year is different. The previous 2 boys both chose Colchester but neither offered. It seems the Colchester lists do not seem to be as fluid as others. No2 was eventually offered KEGS (initially WHSB). No 1 at WHSB.

Newbie here and these posts with scores are very helpful. Please keep them coming.

Well done GibsonES335, hope you are pleased. You may still get Colchester in the next few weeks as there will be a lot of shifting about. It may be worth ringing up to find out where she is on the waiting list for Colchester when they open tomorrow.
