Can somebody please explain to me how many people applied to CRGS in 2011 and does this mean that you have to be ranked 1-96 in that school in order to get in? As I noticed that somebody was ranked 140 and got into CRGS as their first choice?? I find this all very confusing

Hi martynleona,

Usually around 500 applicants list CRGS as a preference. It varies year on year. Some applicants will have put it as first choice. Others will have put it as their second or lower choice. If (say) 50 of the top 96 applicants have placed CRGS as second (or lower) choice and been successful in obtaining higher preference choice, then the cut off in rank has to move accordingly. The cut off rank is generally much lower than 96th position. Possibly even around 150th. It does vary though.

First-timer's reply is spot on. In 2011 exam for entry in Sept 2012, 466 applicants selected CRGS as one of the choices of CSSE school. 96 places were on offer and places are re-assigned when pupils offered places do not take them up. It is not surprising that someone raked 140 was offered a place after results and decisions made. Some pupils may have chosen other CSSE schools or preferred independent schools or may have moved or chosen another state school. In my DS case, he was offered a place at KEGS and ranked 37th at CRGS but we ended up choosing another school freeing up places at both CSSE schools for someone else..

FYI: At KEGS in 2011 exam, they take 112 pupils, 744 selected KEGS as one of their choices and I believe the final cut-off was 170.

For further clarification you can have a look on this thread:

You will see that people often receive multiple offers. The schools are unaware which schools you have on your list and will offer a place if your child meets their criteria. The council then allocate the school that is highest on your list.

A boy in my DC class has 3 (excellent) comps as his 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices with KEGS as his 4th choice school. So even if he scores 100% in every exam and is placed 1st for KEGS he will be going to his catchment comp as his first choice school.

He is a very able child, but at the end of the day liked the feel of his local comp. So he will be one of the 744 applicants who will never take up a place.

Wonder why his parents put him through the exam. Each to their own, but I see the exam as a means to an end.

Let's hope there are another 700 or so boys who did the same - that way my DS may stand a chance!
