As a 'first time' slightly stressed mum could I seek your advice as to whether a score of 323.454 stands any chance of getting into SHSB? The yellow zone in the guidance sheet starts at 316 but that seems low? I'm wondering what to tell my boy? Help!

Welcome to the forum :D
Are you in catchment or out of catchment?

If you have room in your CAF then apply, put the schools in the the order your prefer. Put SHSB on top if you want it. Wait till March & see.

Hiya, We are out of catchment for SHSB. I note from last year that a score of 323 was offered during September? This all seems so ambiguous. Id like to retain some hope but I want to manage expectations....

You're in virtually the same position as my son. He has just under 323. We will put the Southend schools down, but I think it is highly unlikely a place will be secured if as everyone is saying it is a high scoring year.

Don't worry about people saying it is a high scoring year, standardisation will take account of that and lower everyone's scores! What you need to worry about is the numbers in and out of catchment applying to the schools.

Hi

Just wondering where the information comes from that "everyone is saying it is a high scoring year". Only a handful of people have put their scores down on the "scores post" - a lot of them are high but I suspect that this has put a lot of people off with low scores from posting.

Every year is different, so it is better to apply.

I cannot see that it is possible to have a " high scoring year" when the system works on standardised scores. The way standardisation works, there has to be just as many scores below average as above average.
The only way for more children to get higher scores is if more children sit the exam, but then there will also be more lower scores as well. As finally said the scores on this forum are not a representative cross section!

somewhere on here ! someone posted that they went to the information session at one of the Southend schools last year and they were given some information about the in catchment places so it might be worth going along if you can.

With out any knowledge of Southend, it does seem quite low but still in with a chance so worth a try on the CAF since you still have 3 places for non-selective options as well.
