2013 Standardised Data
CSSE have kindly responded to my query on the official statistics for 2013 11+ exam for 2014 entry
*******************************************************
11+ Standardisation Report – October 2013
Each pupil's raw scores were standardised (mean=100, standard deviation=15). The values used, in 2013, are presented in the table below.
2013 (2014 entry) .............. Mean .................... Standard Deviation
Verbal Reasoning .............. 43.7641 ................... 15.6092456
English ......................... 24.642272 ................... 6.9241364
Maths .......................... 20.835977 .................. 8.2130553
In each case the calculation proceeds as follows:
Standardised score = (((raw score - mean) / standard deviation) x 15) + 100
Total score = 1.5 standardised Verbal Reasoning + 0.75 standardised Mathematics + 0.75 standardised English.
Thus a candidate with average marks on each paper will obtain a total of 300, comprising the results in the three papers weighted 2:1:1.
*******************************************************
I have verified that this set of values generates a 100% exact match for the 56 scores posted in this forum (assuming one poster incorrectly posted a typo in their score).
*******************************************************
1. a maximum Verbal Reasoning score of 80/80 translates into a "normal" standardised score of 134.82
2. a maximum English score of 50/50 translates into a "normal" standardised score of 154.93
3. a maximum Maths score of 40/40 translates into a "normal" standardised score of 135
A perfect score with all three maximums would result in an overall standardised score of 419.683
Incidentally scoring 0,0 and 0 in each of the three papers would result in an overall standardised score of 168.33

Re: 2013 Standardised Data
Comparing subject scores in 2012,2013 and 2014 entry
(apologies to Blitz who has posted some comments already due to this post being delayed)
Note: years relate to entry of pupil
Verbal Reasoning (out of 80)
..... mean one standard deviation range of standardised score (0-maximum)
2012 ..... 45.5 ..... 15.4 ..... 55.6 - 133.7
2013 ..... 45.6 ..... 17.3 ..... 60.3 - 129.9
2014 ..... 43.8 ..... 15.6 ..... 57.9 - 134.8
The 2014 entry shows a marked lower mean score than both previous years suggesting a harder VR paper than previous two years. This also means that a high VR score is rewarded even more. The Essex VR paper is not released so it is hard to verify this.
English (out of 50)
..... mean one standard deviation range of standardised score (0-maximum)
2012 ..... 23.0 ..... 6.9 ..... 50.4 - 158.6
2013 ..... 18.7 ..... 7.1 ..... 60.5 - 166.0
2014 ..... 24.6 ..... 6.9 ..... 46.6 - 154.9
The 2013 entry seemed like a harder paper than 2012 but the 2014 mean suggests the English paper was much easier than the 2012 entry. My two cents (purely speculation) is that more students /parents/tutors have realised that there are some easier marks eg spelling, punctuation!
Mathematics (out of 40)
..... mean one standard deviation range of standardised score (0-maximum)
2012 ..... 21.6 ..... 8.1 ..... 60.2 - 133.8
2013 ..... 21.8 ..... 7.1 ..... 53.6 - 138.6
2014 ..... 20.8 ..... 8.2 ..... 62.0 - 135.0
The 2014 mean is slightly lower than 2013 and 2012 but not by any significant amount.
********************************************************************
Incidentally, based on the 56 scores posted in the results thread in this forum , the mean score is 347.3 so clearly the scores here are not representative of all scores. The comments in various threads referring to high scores this year is more a reflection of the skewed sample. On one hand you could infer that parents who use this 11+ forum have DD and DS who are on average above average

Re: 2013 Standardised Data
Well done Aang for getting the info yet again!
Very interesting data.
So maths was slightly harder: 2012- 21.8 mean mark, 2013- 20.8 mean mark
English a lot easier: 2012- 18.7 mean mark, 2013- 24.6 mean mark
VR slightly harder this year: 2012- 45.6, 2013- 43.7
Is overall highest ss score 419.683? Presume a typo!

Re: 2013 Standardised Data
Sorry to be thick but how do you work it out if your score was less than the mean score eg. VR 41/80 ?
Thanks !
Thanks !
Re: 2013 Standardised Data
The mean score for VR this year was 43.7.
You DS scored 41, so he was 2.7 below the average mark for all candidates.
It is a decimal because it will be all the VR marks divided by approx 4000 candidates. Eg, 174800 marks/4000= 43.7
Hope that helps.

Re: 2013 Standardised Data
It just means your DC's VR score will slightly below 100!Jim's Dad wrote:Sorry to be thick but how do you work it out if your score was less than the mean score eg. VR 41/80 ?

(((41-43.7641)/15.6092456) x 15) + 100 = 97.34
Re: 2013 Standardised Data
Sorry to jump in here form a different forum, but could i ask the mean is it from the cohort who took the exam or a national cohort. I hope this question makes sense.
Thanks
Thanks

This is just referring to the CSSE 11+ tests.Oshosh wrote:Sorry to jump in here form a different forum, but could i ask the mean is it from the cohort who took the exam or a national cohort. I hope this question makes sense.

Re: 2013 Standardised Data
So it is just the kids who took this test, that this mean score was calculated from...?dez wrote:This is just referring to the CSSE 11+ tests.Oshosh wrote:Sorry to jump in here form a different forum, but could i ask the mean is it from the cohort who took the exam or a national cohort.
