Essex VR format

Post by patricia »

Dear All

I have been communicating with a member concerning the types of questions found in the CSSE VR tests.

ON looking at the CSSE website, I noticed that the VR papers for sale, produced by Nfer [now GL assessment] stated:

We are unable to sell past VR exam papers as copyright is owned by Nfer Nelson. This practice paper contains similar types of question to the exam but may vary in the number of questions and the timing of the test.

Not available in bookshops.

http://www.csse.org.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I asked the member to send an example of each type used in this paper, from the information given to me, I can conclude that the VR test uses questions from the 21 type stable.

Please remember that as there is only 1 VR test, there will only be approx 12 types on the paper, however that 12 will be chosen from the 21.

Papers that cover the 21 types include: IPS, The Tutors, Susan Daughtrey [Bright Sparks Series ONLY] Walsh.

Hope this helps.

Hi Patricia

Thanks for confirming this.

I had come to the same conclusion, but was never sure.

Could you please update the Question Types by Region page

Approximate scores required

Post by moved »

An average needed for Chelmsford/Colchester is approximately 75%, Southend for out of borough children is around 60%.

This is very imprecise as the scores are standardised each year. If you scroll back a few pages you will find a couple of threads titled "Scores on the doors". These will give you the actual scores that children got and where they ended up.

Myths and legends

Post by Nefertiti »

Hi
I am new to this forum. My DS has taken the exam last Saturday. I placed KEGS second in my choices as I was not too sure if he will do well enough and was not aware that the pass mark could be under 85%. What will happen next year if I get offered our 1st choice [not a grammar school) but he scored enough to get a place at KEGS? Will I have to go on the waiting list for KEGS and if so, will he be placed as per his score?
Let me know, thanks. :)

Hi Nefertiti - you will be offered a place at the first school on your list that your child is elgible for of this this the first school then unfortunately if you put the GS second you will not be offered a place even if your child passes .
i am afraid you will need to appeal after the allocation date. Frustrating I know but if you had put KEGS first then if he had not scored enough then he woild have been eligible for his seconda place school as thouhg it was the first.

Actually, from what the ex-head lead me to believe it may be rather better than you hope. You can add him to the waiting list and he will be placed on the list according to his score. So if he has passed highly enough to be awarded a place he should be top of the list and be able to take the first place available. But you will have to approach them via the waiting list.

If you do not want to take this risk you can phone the council and try to change your preference order. You would need to explain that you did not realise that you could put KEGS first.

thank you both. Very good advice. At this stage, it is only hypothetical; so I'll have to wait until 1st March 2011. It might not go that way if he does not get a pass mark and does not get his 1st choice either.

Good Luck to anyone whose kids took the exam or about to take it on 1s December; the kids have all done well to go thru the stress and extra preparation. And they all deserve few treats irrespective of the results. :) :)

Myths and legends 2

My first time of posting, although I have been a lurker for a while. Have just heard this and wonder if it is possible?

A family friend whose daughter attends a private school in London and who sat the 11+ at CCHS (Chelmsford) tells us that his daughter's school informed them that their daughter has passed her 11+. Apparently she got 100% and came first for CCHS? The point that is being made I think is that they might have been told early because their dd attends a private school and CCHS (Chelmsford) has contacted the school for reference? I thought results are not told to ANYONE until the stated date of March 01/11??? :?
