English Standardised Score = (((Raw Score - 40.3) / 8.7 ) * 15 ) + 100 = E
Maths Standardised Score = (((Raw Score - 32.5) / 11.2) * 15 ) + 100 = M

Overall Standardised Score = 1.5 (E + M)

I have used this formula to compare with actual results of the shared scores in this forum :

Raw Score SS *SS Eng *SS Maths *SS *Difference
E M
40.3 32.5 - 100 100 300 -- (Sample one added for us to understand mean scores give a SS of 300)
48 34 323.05 113.2758621 102.0089286 322.93 0.12
45 38 323.3 108.1034 107.3661 323.2 0.1
44 42 328.75 106.3793103 112.7232143 328.65 0.1
47 39 330.5 111.5517241 108.7054 330.39 0.11
47 47 346.55 111.5517241 119.4196429 346.46 0.09
44 52 348.85 106.3793103 126.1160714 348.74 0.11
48 47 349.14 113.2758621 119.4196429 349.04 0.1
51 46 354.9 118.4482759 118.0803571 354.79 0.11
48 50 355.16 113.2758621 123.4375 355.07 0.09

54 58 386.75 123.6206897 134.1517857 386.66 0.09

* Calculated as per the formula given above.

If someone wants me to add their scores to this list, I am more than happy to do this

This is interesting.

The conclusions that can be drawn are:

i) The raw scores on maths were (on average) lower than last year, so the paper was 'harder'
ii) The raw scores on english were (on average) higher than last year, so the paper was 'easier'

The standard deviations on both were roughly equivalent, so the spread around the average scores is about the same.

The means (crudely) that you need a higher score in english that you did last year to do well once standardised, and a lower score in maths.

None of the above is affected by the number of candidates. So, if the number of kids applying to a given school is the same as last year, then the cut off will be the same, i.e. the traffic light system will be accurate.

However , if the increased number of candidates (6000, rather than 4000) translates into more applications for any given school, then the cut-off will be higher, i.e. the traffic light system will under estimate the score required.

Absolutely, this seems to be correct deductions from what we have found until now.

A parent mentioned that 500 students out of 6000 didnt appear in the exam. So, in effect 4100 last year (considering these many appeared) and 5500 this year - slightly better than what we thought earlier.

Standardised scores don't seem to be affected by number of students. However, it is possible more students apply for places (as more have appeared)

** we are getting wiser by the hour, ;-) ** or so we think - not sure how much we would have scored if we (parents) attempted csse :-)

I think numbers have now been updated:

4900 in 2016
5380 in 2017

wonder how the increase of 500 would affect the actual numbers of applications

Up 10% on average, I would expect. However, as the cut-offs are in the 'fat' part of the bell curve, it is unlikely to move the cut-off by more than a few points, i.e. no dramatic shifts from the traffic-light guidance.

Of course, there are lies, damn lies and statistics.

No one will know until all places actually allocated - March and beyond.

Only Maths was harder than last year.

Evidence suggests that English was generally significantly higher scoring.
