Re: Standardised Score CSSE 2017
I asked CSSE for mean and standard deviations for 2017:
English - 40.3/8.7 (mean/stddev)
Maths - 32.5/11.2
In 2016 the numbers were:
English - 28.3/8.14
Maths - 35/11.96
English - 40.3/8.7 (mean/stddev)
Maths - 32.5/11.2
In 2016 the numbers were:
English - 28.3/8.14
Maths - 35/11.96

Re: Standardised Score CSSE 2017
Thanks for your replies, I think you're right - higher scores this year compared to last few years.
Another reason might be that there were more students who took the exam. I remember a discussion with a few parents on the day of the exam - at least 5000 students gave csse this year as the candidate numbers perhaps indicate number of students.
Any information on this?

Big Difference in CSSE Standardised scores from last year
The standardised scores are definitely lower this year.
Based on the information from CSSe website (From Home click box on top left, CSSE 11+ Examination and then click Preparing for 11+), the standardisation report published October 2016 for Sep 2017 entry reads
English : Mean 28.3011 and Standard Deviation 8.1419
Maths : Mean 34.9669 and SD 11.9659
They have given the formula as
Standardised score for subject = (((Raw Score - Mean) / SD ) * 15 ) + 100
Final Standardised Score = 1.5 * (Standardised Maths + Standardised English)
Based on last year's data
For a raw score of English 48 and Maths 52, we get
English Standardised Score = (((48 - 28.3011) / 8.1419 ) * 15 ) + 100 = 136.2917
Maths Standardised Score = (((52 - 34.9669) / 11.9659) * 15 ) + 100 = 121.3521
Standardised score for same results in last year = 1.5 (136.2917 + 121.3521) = 386.4656
However, the standardised score this year for the same score of English 48 and Maths 52 is only 359.17, which is a huge difference.
So, I am not sure if this means the cut offs this year will go down or be higher than last year.

Re: Big Difference in CSSE Standardised scores from last yea
Thanks this definitely makes a lot of sense. I think there were more kids giving the exam and more kids got higher marks. So Standardised Score, in a way, show position of your child in the list of all kids who appeared in the exam.Billericay_Dad wrote:The standardised scores are definitely lower this year.

Re: Standardised Score CSSE 2017
I was advised by CSSE it was over 6000 children this year! Correction 18/10/2017: In 2017 5380 sat the exam, and approx. 6000 registered prior.proud_parent wrote:Thanks for your replies, I think you're right - higher scores this year compared to last few years.

Re: Standardised Score CSSE 2017
Does anyone know if 68% of all the children's results fall within one standard deviation? and if so does the CSSE also use a second deviation in their stats? Thank you.

Wow, that seems quite a bit for 1200 places (150 per school for 8 schools)Daddy cool wrote:I was advised by CSSE it was over 6000 children this year!proud_parent wrote:Thanks for your replies, I think you're right - higher scores this year compared to last few years.

Is there information on how many last year or the year before?

Re: Standardised Score CSSE 2017
My thinking was that the cut offs should stay the say as previous years as the standardised score system would rank each boy in relation to all the other boys who took the test this year. So even though more entries this year and some high marks the adjustment should have already have been made in the scores they have been given , could be wrong of course.........
