11 Plus Exams Forum

Hello our son took 11+ with last minute minimal prep (only registered few weeks before to do it as we moved to Essex recently long story) and we weren't expecting him to score highly but thought it worth a shot and a good experience. He scored 315 which we are delighted with but OOC. Looking at advice sheets and googling etc decided no point at all in applying for SHSB or WHSB. However speaking to his teacher at parent's eve today (ex pupil at Essex Grammar) said we should still apply. I guess it would do no harm as we have 6 choices and another place virtually guaranteed at an outstanding non grammar elsewhere. Just not wanting to give up a chance however tiny. Lowest offer 322 in last years so I know son really has no chance with 315 but just need closure! Any thoughts welcomed.

It is, as you have already worked out, very unlikely that he will get a place at either school. However, if naming one or both still leaves you with enough places on your CAF, go ahead and do it - one way of definitely not getting a place is not to apply to start with.

In year places do come up occasionally, so you can put your DS's name on the CI list (sorry, I only know how this procedure worked at one of the girls' schools a few years back, but the schools / SBC admissions team should be able to explain the current system).

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I was ready to move on yesterday putting the 11+ result to bed until DS's teacher said what she did. I know he hasn't any chance but will put both grammars down as we have school choices to play with. This will satisfy the 'what if' feeling and if he wants to apply for a place later he could give it a go. I think he will get the non grammar outstanding school (which we like as well) and do very well there - just wanting the best for DC and wishing the wait to get a secondary school place was over with - as we all do. Could you consider moving ? That score would be good for IC.
