CEM 2017 (2018 entry) IC vs OC scores discussion

Post by caringdaddy »

Worth opening this thread as lots of discussion regarding the scores and potentially large numbers in GREEN zone.
The classical Bell's curve is like this

The 150 girls would mostly be the high performers (IC+OC) and some average performes (IC only).
The trends from recent years have shown significant intake from the average group (IC). However, this year it might be an unpleasant change.
If people can discuss the results, it might give parents of borderline group some direction.

Not wishing to sound negative, but...

I'm not sure where that graphic came from originally, but it isn't 'Bell's Curve', as in, something pertaining to a person called Bell'. It really is just a 'bell curve', as in, describing the shape of it :) .

Even allowing for 'not drawn to scale', the 'average' section looks like 'within one standard deviation of the mean', so within the standardised score range 85 - 115 on a 'normal' normal distribution. Which accounts for approximately 68% of candidates, not 33%.

Thanks for your reply

I know these are mere stats but things are so unclear for parents from these scores. Sometimes waiting for the results brings more agonizing wait for the allocation day.
Hope the schools provide more accurate feeding and placements to enable parents make definite decisions.
According to BLITZ, the cut off scores might be the same as last year as the top cohort might contain a lot of OOC grils. Let's hope thats true.

DD scored
CCHS (CEM) 110.63 I/C
CSSE ENG 50 MATHS 50 360.34

Our first choice is CCHS but very worried about the top 360 girls.
Message for Experts- shall we look out for Colchester or CCHS a realistic possibility this year?
Thanks

If you want CCHS, then put that as first choice. No one actually knows the cut off scores. Put your schools in order of your preference. Not in order of whether or not you think you will get in.

Dear adrianamum

Colchester girls option 2
Westcliff option 3
SHG 4

Make sure you look at the travel options as it seams to be easier to get to the Southend schools from Chelmsford unless you live near Broomfield
