Just pondering whilst we wait these last few (painful) days

We haven’t made a final choice until we get the result but just wondering if we get over the 303 (or whatever it may be this year)we are in catchment. If we put SHSB for example as first choice are you (as far as can be) guaranteed to get it? Anyone experience of previous years and people not getting first grammar choice and getting the other?

2014 entry, 303 didn't get a place at SHSB and unfortunately for the IC boys on the waiting list, adding another 30 places resulted in OOC places only, as the then admissions policy of a set maximum number of IC boy's had to be applied. This was subsequently amended to a set proportion.

Another few years back and the cut off for SHSB was 313.

There aren't a lot of guarantees when it comes to the CSSE 11+ and Essex Grammar School admissions I'm afraid.

Looking at the WHSB admission criteria, the only criterion that 'guarantees' a place at the school is where WHSB is named in a child’s statement of special education needs and the child passes the test. It states that the school and the Local Authority have a duty to admit the child.

The only other ‘guarantee’ for getting a place will be known after we receive the Red, Amber, 'Yellow', Green guidance sheet and the child achieves a score in the Green column. Achieving a score in the Green column will ‘almost certainly ensure a place is awarded’.

The above also applies for SHSB.

Thanks both - yes I mean when the sheet comes out then what they have for the green will mean if you’ve got that then you will be guaranteed that school

I do know of children in previous years who wanted SHSB but got Wescliff.

According to the guidance sheet, all children that passed with 303 and in the catchment got a place.

Put both in order of preference. If second choice is allocated on March 1st go on wait list for your preferred school without giving up your allocated school.

Just as an aside last year headmaster at SHSB told us, during an open afternoon after the CSSE exam results had been released, how many in catchment boys had passed. This was way below number of in catchment boys places available so 303 would secure an in catchment place at either school.

The lowest out-of-catchment (OOC) scores in the last 4 years for SHSB and WHSB are 319 and 324 respectively.
