Hi. Just wondered, does your child automatically get put on the waiting list for chosen schools or is it something you request?

Hi Nicki, Yes, the child will be automatically placed in the wait list for the schools that were placed above in the list from the school offered. Usually by mid/end of March, you get to know the wait list details. If you want to know the position earlier, you need to phone the council/school and find out.

The waiting lists for all schools in Essex are held by Essex CC until 31st August; for all schools in the Borough of Southend on Sea (so WHSB / WHSG / SHSB / SHSG, if it's the grammar schools you are interested in), the waiting list is held by Southend Borough Council until 22nd August. You need to check with the individual schools as to whether they then take control of their own waiting list, or leave it to be administered by the local authority. (In Essex, all academies and Foundation and VA schools administer their own waiting lists from 31st August).
