What is your thoughts about Pate’s?

Post by Janicet118 »

Hi all,
I am after the advice/information about Pate’s. We had visited the school this morning and love the school but would like to know more about the school. Does anyone here who has a child/ children in the school and don’t mind to tell me about the school please?

Depends what you want to know in particular?

My 2 girls are there, and it’s been great for both of them for different reasons.

Clearly the school is academic (possibly to the detriment of some non- academic subjects), but it does manage to do it in a non-pressured way. The kids seem to be resilient, autonomous learners.

The House system is fantastic - in normal times it means the kids know lots of others in different years. House music and drama are highlights of the year.

A very impressive school. But is there anything specific you want to know?

Can I join in and ask some Pate's stuff, too? My questions:

Are most of the clubs at lunchtime? It looked that way to me from the website. Just curious.
Do they go back to the beginning when teaching Y7 MFLs? Current primary French is a bit of a non-starter...ahem.
I know loads come from far away, but is there a reasonable cohort of kids from wider Tewkesbury area?
Does it matter if you're not into drama? Can you hide back-stage and do tech stuff (lights?)? DD doesn't really 'perform'. Like pulling teeth.
Sport: do you have to be amazing to make it into a team? DD is a competent all-rounder, but not amazing at anything.

Crikey. That's loads. Feel free to ignore me! TIA.

Also have 2 DDs at Pates (who know Busyandconfused girls well!)

Both my girls (one in Year 9, one just started in Year 7) love it despite being totally different characters.

Eldest is a self proclaimed "Uber geek" introvert who loves the peer driven competitiveness (teachers put no uneccessary pressure on the students) and the collegiality of the House system which drives much of the extra curricular provision. The kids are hyper loyal to their houses and it adds a very interesting public schooly vibe to the place. Eldest is very arty but not sporty or into on stage drama (she's likely to choose Drama GCSE but will specialise in design)

Younger sis is much more outgoing, openly competitive and - although very focused and self disciplined academically - is into everything else too. Has singing lessons, is in the choir, has run for School Council and is on the Hockey team.

Yes most clubs are at lunchtime (long break and lunch to compensate) and many run by Year 13s

No to being into Drama and Sporty. Pates encourages all students to be themselves, embrace their own strengths and interests and enables them to feel entirely comfortable in their own skin and shine in their own way.

Yes, languages from scratch. They assume students come with nothing but expect them to pick it up quickly. Both my DDs study Mandarin and French. You have to consciously opt for the former or do German until Year 9 when Spanish also becomes an option.

Plenty of local students. My two get on a packed contract coach from Gloucester and all their friends are Gloucester / Stroud and Chelt based.

It is a truly wonderful school and I would recommend it to anyone

(For comparison, I also have a DD who chose Ribston over Pates or the other girls grammars, a school I would also back 100% for different reasons. It suits her completely!! It really is all about the best fit for your DC so ask as much as you like!)

Mumto3Girls, thanks a million for all that info. Worth its weight in gold! Well done on getting THREE girls settled in big school. That is no mean feat. What's your secret?! x

DS made his decision to go there next September so it's really great to hear such positive feedback about Pates. Thank you.
