Denmark High School for girls

Thoughts and opinions on this school

I am told it is a very good school academically, but that there is not much pastoral care. I wouldnt want to send my daughter to a school for her to be pushed beyond her capability and so goes into 'melt down'

What are the values of the school, is it just academic results or do they nurture the children for the individuals they are whatever thier capability. And what are the social events like?

Dont know if its relevant but she scored 238 for the school and is level 5 sats

Thanks

Dear RussellK
Your DD sounds like she would thrive at HSFG. Expectations are high but there is lots of fun to be had too and opportunities to try different activities. In my experience homework is not too heavy (ok - the occasional extended project might require some major effort but generally fine) and the drama productions are superb. If you have ticked for other grammars just have a think about what your DD is particularly interested in - obviously Ribston has the dance studio and dance opportunities and I have to say it has a very friendly atmosphere and ethos. I have DDs at both schools and I think they are both great. You could always ask to visit HSFG again I am sure.

Dear Russellk33,
I too had exactly the same concerns last year.
DD (sensitive and not a fan of change) started in September and is absolutely loving it, her words not mine. :D
DD has a buddy who is in yr8, she wrote to her in June, they met at the induction day in July and they still keep in contact, even now!!
At the parents meeting in late September we met DDs form tutor, head of year, assistant head and the Deputy Head - all seemed to know DD - not sure if this is a good or bad sign though!!
They are split into form groups, tech groups and houses so plenty of mixing with a variety of girls not only in their year group but across the school as well.
Already had induction at S.Cerney water park, school disco, parents meeting, chamber concert evening & house drama is this week so plenty of activities. Most clubs are during lunch break (drama, choir, debating etc) and some after school (netball etc).
I know that I have made the right decision and have no concerns, the level of work and homework is appropriate.
They have fun and despite leaving for the bus at 7.25 and not being home til 4.30 DD is extremely happy.
Make an appointment to look at the schools you are interested in as now you have the results you may view them differently! Also ask your DD, she may already have a view but may not want to say!
Good Luck 8)

For what my opinion is worth, which is really not much as my daughter does not go to the school, though several of her friends do: there are girls who would not be suited to a single-sex school. . The only girls I know who have been less then happy there are those who would probably have been better off in a mixed environment. This is probably a small proportion of girls, and if your daughter is one such, I expect you know that already deep down. If she is not, and is happy to be with just girls, I imagine she will be happy and do very well there.

Can I just add that DD only really mixed with boys at junior school and (still) prefers playing in trees and getting very muddy with her friends!
There are boys on the bus & also at disco (alternates between HSFG & STR venues) which she thinks this is great!
I did think that a single gender school would be an issue but went with my gut instinct which has, so far paid off!!
PS she did have offers for all 4 GSs.
