Here is a poll to tie Year 5 CAT score to likely GS place/place qualified for, for Stroud GS.

Stanine 6 = CAT score 104-111
Stanine 7 = CAT score 112-118
Stanine 8 = CAT score 119-126
Stanine 9 = CAT score 127 and above

I stopped at Stanine 7 in the end, because only 10 poll options allowed.

Sorry to sound really stupid, but what is a Stanine? what do these numbers mean?

When children take the Cognitive Abilities Test test in Y5, their standardized score is organized into one of 9 stanines, and these are used to suggest what SAT level they should achieve, and perhaps to indicate whether they are suited for grammar school/likely to obtain a place.

Stanines organize the standardized scores into 9 different ability groups:

Stanine, Description, % of pupils, Corresponding Standardized Score

Stanine 9, Very High, 4%, 127 and above

Stanine 8, Above Average, 7%, 119-126

Stanine 7, Above Average, 12%, 112-118

Stanine 6, Average, 17%, 104-111

Stanine 5, Average, 20%, 97-103

Stanine 4, Average, 17%, 89-96

Stanine 3, Below Average, 12%, 82-88

Stanine 2, Below Average, 7%, 74-81

Stanine 1, Very Low, 4%, 73 and below

Hi, I think you'll find that most parents aren't privvy to such information from the primary schools.

Certainly try at DDs school. Until, that is, the new head came a year ago.

He's said he sees no reason not to give the info to parents and plans to send it out as routine to all parents later this year.

He's also happy to give the info on request.

Quite what his staff think of that, heaven knows.

The only down side is possible playground boasting (from parents, if not the children)!

Well , we were told our child's CAT results at the parents evening last week. Did not ask for it (didn't know he was doing them at school this early:?: )and only because od reading this forum did I know what the teacher was telling us.

Our school also gave out CAT scores when requested, if you ask you must have the right to see them surely?

I think you can if you write a letter, throw in data protection etc,stamp your feet and cause a scene . I am struggling as I still have 2 other dcs at the school and have no wish to upset the teachers unless I absolutely have to so I may be writing in March!

you could ask to see them so you could decide if it would be appropriate to enter your DC for the 11+. Although you don't have to give a reason why you want to see them.

If teachers wanted to give out scores that show how able your children are, then they'd put something useful on the school reports, rather than 'effort'.
