But it would have been a lovely cycle ride along the towpath once restored.FluffyCat wrote:I do know people who have not let their DC's go to grammar this year because of the transport cost. It actually made it easier to let our DC go to Pates - we may as well pay £1500 that we haven't got, when it was going to cost £600 to go to the more local grammar...

hi all, and well done to all your DCs on their successes It's so good to see that so many appear to be getting their first choices. I do think that the changes in school transport are affecting people's choices and that many may be opting for a local school (whether grammar or comp) due to having to consider transport costs.
My DS just missed the pass for Crypt by a couple of marks so we are still in limbo. We have sent our form back accepting our second choice (local comp) but requesting reconsideration for Crypt (which we still put on CAF as first choice).
Only another month to wait then............
The Shire Hall letter definitely said 98 places offered, so assume this means the 98 boys who put Crypt as first choice and had achieved the pass of 107.5?
Given that Crypt's PAN is 112, does anyone know whether this means they can/will offer those 14 places to boys who didn't pass, but have asked for reconsideration, i.e. WITHOUT needing to go to appeal?
I know this would go against what Capers said in another post that they can only offer places to those who pass, but I know at least 3 boys now in 6th Form who didnt pass and were offered places without appealing.

I am pretty sure in the past they have offered places at Crypt to the near passes. It has been mentioned on this site more than once.
I know it flies in the face of the pass mark issue but lets face it if we were going to be rigid about this pass mark mythology all those who weren't in the top 120 for Pates and SHS should also be deemed as failed. They haven't of course, but they are an initial waiting list, something Crypt doesn't have and unlike other schools they seem to avoid the passed but bad luck we ain't giving you a place injustice.

Sorry, but the school is selective, so only children deemed selective can be offered a place, even if it's under subscribed. If the school did do so, then they would be acting against the Schools Admissions Code, and could be reported to the secretary of state (aka the schools adjudicator) for breaking it.Glos_Mum wrote: Capers will be along soon, and can confirm if those remaining 14 places will require an actual appeal (fingers crossed for you, that you won't have to go through all of that). It's a cruel process and I really feel for you and your DS.
Appeals panels can allow appeals if the parents can persuade them that the children are suitable, etc, and admitting them would not be against the other pupils interest.
Further up the school, the admissions criteria can be different, in that each school has different ways of deeming if a child is suitable for Y9, 10, etc. In the past some schools did use some very -err- interesting ways of deciding such matters, but it now must be transparent.
However, I would always recommend appealing especially if CAT & SAT scores are good, along with all academic evidence - and you have other mitigating circumstances.

Re: 2012 entry - discussion & chat about Allocations & Score
Just wondering if anyone can help. A friend of mine has a DD who unfortunately didn't pass for Pates; she didn't tick to "share results" with any other schools as she wasn't sure of the system. She scored 199 for Pates. I was under the impression that for Pates, only the top 160 knew what their results were and just given rankings. Everyone outside the 160 were given their scores and the 199 is the Pates "points". Is this correct? She's now decided that she wants to go on a waiting list for another girls' grammar. We didn't bother ticking for Pates for various reasons (one of which we knew our DD wouldn't pass in any event!), so I'm not sure of the system for their marking and therefore can't advise her. Would her score stand her in good stead to be considered at the other girls' grammars, ie, would 199 points be "worth" more than say a 199 for Denmark or Ribston? Can anyone go on the waiting list? Is there a cut-off point where you wouldn't be considered to go on a waiting list?
I also have another friend who apparently was just one point off the Pates 160 and has therefore opted for Denmark; should she appeal/go on the waiting list for Pates in any event. Sorry to be daft, but as I say, I know nothing about Pates. Cheers.

Hi Stressed?Moi?
If you look at the 1st subject on page 1 '2011 Results Compilation Table', it shows a comparison of scores for different schools, the lowest Pates score shown is 209, the equivalent scores for other girls schools are: HSFG 203, Ribston 217, SHS 215, hope that helps.
