Ribston induction day and other queries

We received our "congratulations" and welcome certificate and school website pupil login from Ribston (which I thought was a lovely touch and really made DD smile) and it mentions an induction day in July, but not the date. Does anyone know when it is?

While I'm about it, a couple of other queries please:

1) I can't seem to find out about the uniform; is there a second hand shop?
2) Is there a swimming pool; I just can't remember seeing one but a friend says there is. If so, how often are swimming lessons? Also, what sports are played and how often?

Think that's it!!!

Thanks

I am not sure when the induction day is but in the past they have also run a series of after school sessions for girls about to start year 7. They played rounders and had fun. My DD was going to RH by herself and enjoyed these so I would recommend doing these if they are on offer again. A good chance to get to know other girls.

There is a pool and DD did have swimming in Y7 but hasn't done that much swimming at school since (there might be a club though?).

Uniform can be bought/ordered from the school uniform shop in Gloucester (oops, can't remember the name!) I would recommend going for the cotton jumper, the poly one gets full of static!! You can buy leotards and dance wear from dancedirect or I think, order them at the eve induction meeting for parents. I am sure there are second hand uniform sales at school but you might need to give the school a ring for when the next one is. Possibly at that eve meeting??

As for a school bag.....let's not go there!!!

Forgot to say that there are lots of sports opportunities, at lunchtime clubs and some after school too. You name it really. There is a dance summer school in August so you could check if that was open to new starters.

My DD opened her letter from Ribston today as we have been away for a few days. She is very excited too!

The school uniform shop( National Schoolwear Centre) is almost at the very end of Northgate Street Gloucester. The uniforn list is with the school policies: http://www.ribstonhall.gloucs.sch.uk/rh/school_policies" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's great; thanks for your replies.

DD activated her VE login to the website today bless her and has already started posting questions. Don't know if you've seen it but there's a video filmed by some students "showing you around" the school through the eyes of "Billy", the caretaker's dog - it's so sweet.

Really strange about the swimming pool - nobody seems to mention it. It isn't even on the website. Dance summer school sounds excellent - I'll ask about it at the parents' eve. The after school sessions sound good too - she is so excited to be meeting some new friends. I'll pop into Gloucester to find the uniform shop thanks. I can't believe that they only stipulate that girls' skirts need to be "not less than 40cm from waistband to hem"! I'm such an old fogie. :)

Sorry- curiosity has got the better of me about the bag comment- any top tips would be much appreciated - DD is probably going to have to use stagecoach buses and carry her cornet back and forth I guess. How much stuff do they have to carry to and from school?

My DD was also very excited by the letter.

The open day is Thursday 5th July and there is a parents evening the same day. This info was in the letter sent out on 1st March.

I meant the induction day is on 5th rather than open day!

All the girls seem to love Billy the dog. My DD says he popped in and fell asleep in the classroom the other day. :D

The bag comment relates to some very long threads on school bags we have had in the past! You might be able to find them with a search! I think most of the year 7s start off with nice sensible rucksacks and bags which seem to have to morph into various handbags and crazes...a certain store's paper carrier bag for kit??
I have had a few annoying shopping trips in the past with a bag or school shoe theme to them.

Good luck with the induction day. Ribston does always seem a happy school so I am sure your DDs will enjoy it.

Oops, just re-read this thread. Do you know if the "parents eve" follows straight on from collecting them or is it literally an evening? DD's summer fete is after school on 5 July so I had hoped to pick her up and go back to it; she will be gutted if she has to miss her last fete!
