Hi.
Can someone please explain the process.
I am interested in DS going to one of the glos boys GS.
I understand if he gets great results he will get into school of 1st choice, but what if he is lower down.
We live in Kent currently, so I hope distance isn't a factor!

Ultimately I am wondering which sch to put 1st and which second.
I will go to open days in Sept.

Thanks for any advice.
Deb

You do not need to choose 1st 2nd etc until after the test so don't worry about that. Just make sure when you fill in the form to sit the test that you tick all of the grammar schools you are interested in - so for a boy that might be Pates in Cheltenham, Sir Thomas Rich's and Crypt in Gloucester or Marling in Stroud. All the schools share the result then when you have the score you can choose your preference. You will only need to choose one of the schools to sit the test in but that won't make any difference to choosing or getting a place anywhere else. Hope that makes sense. Oh and you need to get the form in to sit the test by the end of September I think. (info will be online)

I just did an in-year application (Year 8 )for 4 Grammar Schools in Gloucestershire. You have to contact the Schools personally (No limit in number of school to apply). Each School will tell you what you need to do for a place/to be place on waiting list. Sir Thomas Rich's, Crypt and Marling-3 hours test-English.Maths.Comprehension(or Science) which can be arrange to be taken at your child current school. Test will be mark by the Year Heads for assessment of academic ability. Pate's test is 1 hour verbal reasoning and score requirement depends on the age of the child and number of applicants. My child missed 3 points to go on Pate's waiting list. The school was very kind and helpful, told me this year(2013) waiting list is long therefore the school has increased the require score. I informed other Schools of the test result. No more test, no question asked, a place was offered to my child from STR based on Pate's test result and discussion between the two School Head Masters. My child took the 3 hours test from Marling but failed to convince the Year Heads he was good enough for their school. Do hope by sharing this personal experience, it will be helpful to anyone thinking to do the same.
