Which local authority pays for out of area pupils?

Post by Skip »

Hi All,

I had a 'debate' with some friends on the weekend about whether Gloucestershire grammars should take out of Gloucestershire pupils. One of the arguments against was that say a Bristol student went to SHS, it is Gloucestershire's local authority that pays for their place. I don't want to get into the rights and wrongs of the debate either way but would be interested in the knowing the actual answer? Or is it centrally funded?

It’s all centrally funded.

It’s big issue locally to me as we are right on the Reading/Wokingham border. Numerous DCs fom one side go to school on the other and many think their council tax goes to paying for DCs from the ‘wrong’ side of the borderline to go to ‘their’ schools.

That’s not how it works. Schools get paid from central funds for the students they have, regardless of where they are from.
