It’s just a posh way of saying they gather in all applications first and then consider them as a whole, rather than individually when they arrive

I don't think that happens. Several admissions tutors I know of have said that no candidate would be disadvantaged by late application, by early application or by application pop in the middle of the process. I had reason to care about this when DD refused to send her application before mid January so I was getting a little jumpy. Obviously Oxbridge is different but they send out interview invitations and rejections by subject/college on the same day and at the same time so date of application makes no difference there either.
