2018 Gloucestershire - ranks/scores only please. Entry 2019

looking at all the rankings on this forum, I have no idea on this!!

We got:
Marling ranked within the Top 150
Crypt ranked within the Top 150
Tommys ranked within the Top 150
Pates ranked within the Top 150

As E.. was ranked within the top 150 placed students and there are 150 places for the new Year 7 in 2019 this information about ranking is very important and is very positive news. (Pates)

I guess this tells me that we got into Pates.

Also, do we ever get to know what he actually scored in %?

No, you won't be told your DS's actual %. There's no need, it's enough to know if they are in the PAN or their ranking if outside the PAN. You know enough to make your decision on the CAF form.

From my limited knowledge you're fairly secure on a grammar place at SHS & Ribston. You'd need to check on HSFG & Crypt.

Put on your CAF in your true order of preference.

Ribston 419
Crypt 903
SHS 397
HSFG 428

My DD loved Ribston and I could see her there and I think her rank gives her a good shot
I also really liked Crypt but I don’t think we stand a chance with that rank!! Is anyone able to offer any thoughts on the Crypt rankings?

Still trying to digest what it all means.

Thinking we have a good chance for Ribston-is there ant chance of SHS?

The rankings look utterly bizarre this year from what little I have seen. I think Crypt have standardised theirs differently from the others - Pates have done this for a while but now it looks like Crypt has changed its algorithms too (luckily, I guess, after what they did last year!).

I've plotted all the ranks for the different schools that have been posted so far to try and spot patterns. Pates' results are all over the place, which we know is due to the requirement to achieve a minimum mark on all sections. So I've discounted those. Instead, I've ranked them all in order of the Crypt results.

I don't think Crypt have applied any different criteria than usual after all, because bar a couple of vague outliers, all the other results are in the same order for the other schools when ordered by Crypt scores.

E.g (boys) Crypt 419, STR 227, Marling 188
Crypt 473, STR 255, Marling 205

E.g. (girls) Crypt 686, SHS 290, Ribston 293, HSFG 311
Crypt 734, SHS 303, Ribston 314, HSFG 330
Crypt 903, SHS 397, Ribston 419, HSFG 428

Even with very patchy data (not everyone has shared results for every school) you can see that the pattern makes sense.

This can be explained by number sharing with each school. Eg. SHS 817, Ribston 990 - this explains why Ribston's scores are lower (higher numbers) than SHS.

I've just seen from Penguin55's post that only 674 girls shared with HSFG, which surprised me as I thought it would have been higher than Ribston, based on the stats. I can only conclude that this is due to different girls sharing their results with the various schools (maybe due to distance?).

The outliers:
MonaB - Crypt 171, STR 419, Marling Top 150. I can't explain this!
Unknown (shared via Steppemum on behalf of a friend): Crypt <200, Ribston <300, SHS and HSFG Top 150. Hard to analyse without the exact stats.
Ozzyp: Crypt 164, HSFG and SHS Top 150, Ribston 163. Doesn't quite follow the pattern but without knowing where in the Top 150 they ranked it's hard to analyse exactly.

If anyone else has any data to add that they haven't already shared, please do!

Hi Monkeyboot,

Based on rankings last year for 2018 entry, your DD would have got a place at Ribston, but not one at SHS. (I'm basing this on knowledge of posts from last year's group where one DD was offered Ribston at rank 450+ and knowledge of someone whose DD was ranked in early 400s for SHS and went on the WL but did not get an offer by September).

Having said that, things WILL change from year to year quite considerably and no-one knows what effect Crypt will have this year so these are guidelines only. If I were in your position, I would put schools in order of choice on the CAF and see what happens on March 1st and possibly beyond.

Your DD has got qualifying scores for three schools so she has done well. The tricky part will be managing her hopes if she is dead set on one particular school. Good luck to you both!
