Hi All,

does anyone know if Ribston keeps kids from the same primary in the same Y7 class or if they put them into different classes?

Just curiosity really.

Thanks.

Nit sure about Ribston, but most secondary schools do not keep all children from one primary in the same class. They usually ask the primary schools if there are any children who they fell should be kept apart or kept together, but that is just as a guideline

I asked the same question at the Ribston open morning and was told if there are a few from the same school (say up to 4 children) then they put them in the same tutor group. If 5 or more then they would split into two smaller groups. Apparently, they do ask you as a parent if you have a preference as to whether you want your child to be with anyone in particular or if you would prefer your child not to be in the same tutor group as others they know.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jacaranda. That will make my DD happy if they keep doing it that way!

My daughter is in Year 7 at Ribston and we were not asked if she wanted to be with her friends. She went with her two best friends (the only 3 from their school) and they were all put in different classes. The school had already said at an information meeting that their policy was to split everyone up to avoid cliques and put everyone in the position where they didn't know anyone and had to make new friends. So what you have been told sounds like a complete change of policy. Maybe this is the new head? I would have liked her to be with her friends but luckily she's very outgoing and has quickly made new friends in her own class as well.

That's interesting Jearund.

We were told that previously (in last few years) form groups were decided upon by which foreign language subject your daughter chose... Apparently all girls in year 7 were given choice of French, German or Spanish before they started and this determined what form group they were put into. But apparently this has now changed (not sure if this change is for current year 7 year group or ready for next years intake)..... but this is apparently definitely what happened with the girls who are now in Year 8 when they joined (as year 8 girls who showed us told us and teachers also confirmed).

Teachers told us that from next September there is no choice in foreign languages and all year 7 do French and Spanish . I know of a few parents who were told (at open day/evenings) that they will be asked for tutor group preferences (i.e. with or without friends) and that they will try to always keep girls from same school together if you want that! I'd be interested to know if anyone else was told different.

Hi Jacaranda, they already do both French and Spanish in Year 7 so it sounds like things changed this year if it was different for the Year 8s. They were told they may get to do German further up the school (I think Year 9 but am not sure). I asked about this and I got the impression it would depend on whether they had a teacher available. Maybe this year was different because of the change to foreign languages and they've reviewed the policy?

DD is in yr 9. Before she joined the school we had all the paperwork to fill in and one of the questions we were asked was if any family member is or had been a Ribston pupil and what house they were in. As we have had 3 family members attend Ribston they were all in the same house, so we opted for that house. There was also a question asking if there were any girls she did not want to be with. The old Head stated that as 7 from DD school was going there, they would all be split up and they were split 2-2-2-1. Two more girls joined from DD's junior school during yr 7 and they were allocated places where the vacancies existed - they did not have a choice.

Before she joined we were informed French and German were the languages offered in yr 7. She did not have a choice of languages until the end of yr 8 when she was offered French or Spanish to study in yr 9.
