I think, generally, there is a realisation amongst secondary schools that the curriculum for GCSE/A levels now requires students to have a good understanding of the written word - regardless if the subject is science or arts based. Too much emphasis on Numeracy/NVR (which are closely related) and only (in many cases) a third emphasis on VR meant that results were not as successful overall (in Progress 8 terms) as they should be from the starting point, or in terms of real GCSE results - even Maths requires a student to understand more wordy questions at GCSE, for example, and History, RE, Geography, English etc etc all have high written components with an increasing focus on SPAG.

Many schools have, therefore, changed the way they rank 11+ entry - from an equal split NVR/VR/NR to NVR/NR:VR on a 50:50 basis or, like Pates has done, requiring a minimum in each section.
