Recommendations by PM (private message) are acceptable, but if we receive complaints that anyone is abusing the system or 'spamming', then we shall not hesitate to take action.
It is important to treat 'anonymous recommendations' with caution. However, there are a number of long standing members whose posts you may have read and whose judgements you may have come to respect. If you receive a recommendation from one of them, it might be worth considering seriously (while still exercising a degree of caution).
If you receive a recommendation from anyone else, please exercise extreme caution!

There are many other ways of getting good tutors, Patricia is so right to point out that you cannot trust strangers recommended by 'strangers'. As Parents, getting tips on the forum to find a good tutor is a good idea. Check your local news papers for tutors advertised, ask them what is their method of working. If you are in doubt then ask if you can talk to somebody they have tutored - to get first hand reference. Second thing is ask year six children's parents who got into the secondary school you prefer, for references.
There are also agencies which can find the right tutor for you, CRB checked.

Absolutely right.cindrella wrote:If you are in doubt then ask if you can talk to somebody they have tutored - to get first hand reference.
I'd also say:
Make sure you get first hand experience and then direct experience. It's your DD or DS and you know him/her better, nobody else can decide whether they are assisting in what is needed.
And above all, trust your instinct. If you feel anything is not right, it probably is. I'd say walk away. The reality is many tutors are selective about the children and families that they take but so should you.
And similarly to when buy anything, you may even like the salesman's pitch but it's the service that makes the difference..
