Exam formats for Herts and Barnet Schools

Post by Stmichaelsfan »

Hi all

My DS is taking the 11+ exams in november, and independent schools in january, and i have just realised going through the forum that each school may have different types of exams eg VR,NVR,maths, comprehension, essay writing. Would be very grateful for info on what exams to prepare for the following schools:
st michaels catholic grammar school
Henrietta barnett school
Parmiters School
Haberdashers Askes girls school
St albans girls high school

Thanks in advance for any replies

For Parmiter's it's VR and maths. Just checked the website and the test will take place on 19th November.

VR = 100 questions in 60 mins (based on Moray House tests and similar to Bond)
maths = 50 questions in 50 mins (based on KS2 curriculum and similar to NFER tests)

Standard version not multiple choice.

By the way, does anyone know whether/how they compensate for age differences in English and Maths exams? Our first has an October birthday whereas the second is mid-August.

They don't. I am not aware of a single school that takes account of date of birth when marking English and Maths exams. Some including DAO use it for marking VR papers to get a result that decides if the English and Maths papers already sat are marked. Indy schools might take account of date of birth however when deciding which applicants to invite back for interview. If they have an August dc on the same results as a september dc they may regard the former to have more potential. DG

I know it's not on the list in the OP, but I seem to recall Mr Garbett telling us that Latymer does age standardise its Maths results in 2nd round, as well as re-standardising the NVR results for the 2nd round cohort. Very thorough.
