Secondary school choices

Okay so I must be really out of the loop, but when we received the introductory pack from the school on secondary school application I had no idea that we needed to specify 6 schools. I have only 3 schools that I wish to put down.
I am really stuck with choices for schools in/around Enfield, EN1. I am unhappy with most of the schools in the area, needless to say I am praying that DD gets a place at either HBS or Latymer. The third choice is a fairly good comprehensive but other than that I am stuck.
I feel like this is just a minefield - one where I am trying to find the best of the worst (I am sorry to say).
How is everyone else finding this, especially those in/around Enfield and Barnet?
