Pikachu - they look for musical aptitude as well as current level of skill at the audition, so don't worry if the piece isn't overly technical. In past years, pupils have been asked a few simple questions along the lines of why they chose that piece or what they like about playing the instrument, but this is informal chat, not an interview. My daughter got through with a score of 51, I'm delighted. Does anyone know roughly which schools take on vocal and how many places etc?

handbag50 - congratulations to your DS. He must have an ear for music. If he doesn't play an instrument then singing is his only option I think. Does he know any hymns or songs from school? You could get him to sing one of those? Best of luck. RR

Hi Watford Girl - not sure which schools you're interested in, but according to my research, the boys' grammar has 19 music places; 11 for inner postcodes and 8 for outer postcodes. Clement Danes has 21 music places and Rickmansworth 18 music places. I don't think any of them have a quota for vocal v instrumental, it's down to who does well on the day. Good luck! x
