Post by TreforWyn »

How do the schools in the South West Herts Admissions Consortium deal with in year applications 1.e. years later than for 11 plus entry

The consortium only operates the tests for year 7 entry. The rest is run by individual schools, under their own procedures. Each of them has a section on in-year admissions (or "late transfer") in their published admissions criteria.

Is there any connection between an in-year admission and the outcome of the 11+ test? If your child is on a waiting list for a school following the test result, does that waiting list continue into Year 7 and beyond? Can you join the waiting list at a later stage?

To comply with the Admissions Code, waiting lists have to be maintained in oversubscriptions criteria order until at least the end of the autumn term of the year of entry. After that, the waiting list can be kept as it is, or the Admissions authority (school or LEA) can just keep a Continuing Interest list and then rank everyone on it each time a place comes up. You would have to check with the individual school as to what happens after Christmas of year 7.

(I have come across a school which does neither; if there is a place available on the day you enquire, you are lucky, if not, the school tells you to appeal. Apparently, the member of staff who presents the school's case at appeals spends quite a lot of time doing so. This school isn't in Hertfordshire, though).

Thanks all for the most helpful answers

However i have found an additional problem with in-year applications to at least some of the secondary schools in the Watford area. Do any of the schools in the catchment, whether Consortium or not, accept applications from children who are not currently permanently resident in the UK?
