Admissions process for watford girls grammar school

Post by mdalip »

Hi,

I need some guidance for admission in watford girls grammar school. I am not sure how the catchment area rule works- if I need to be resident in the area to qualify for the place in addition to the qualifying scores? I am still doing some more research for other good grammar schools in the same area so any guidance/advice would be appreciated.

thanks

2.1 Specialist places
The school will reserve 21 places (10% of total admissions) for girls selected on the basis of aptitude for music and a further 52 places (25% of total admissions) for girls selected by academic ability. For the purpose of applying the specialist criteria, the
admission area will be divided into two separate areas (the Watford area and the ‘rest of the admission area’) and girls will be placed in one of them according to the location of their normal home address. Applications for these places from candidates who live outside the admission area will only be considered in the event that all of the specialist places are not filled by girls from within the admission area

.
Watford area: The school will reserve 44 specialist places (60% of the total specialist places) for girls whose normal home address lies within the Watford area. Of these places, 13 are reserved for musical aptitude and 31 are reserved for academic ability. In the
event of more than 44 such applications, places will be offered strictly in descending order of candidates’ test scores.
Rest of the admission area: The school will reserve 29 specialist places (40% of the total specialist places) for girls whose normal home address lies within the ‘rest of the admission area.’ Of these places, 8 are reserved for musical aptitude and 21 are reserved for academic ability. In the event of more than 29 such applications, places will be offered strictly in descending order of candidates’ test scores.
If fewer places than the number reserved are accepted by applicants from an area, the balance will be added to the places reserved for girls from the other area.

So, assuming no major changes for 2020 entry, yes, it appears your DD does have to be resident in some part of the designated admission area, at whtever the relevant date is, to stand a chance of a specialist place - it's 'Watford area' and 'rest of admission area', not 'and those living anywhere else'.

The postcodes comprising each of the sections of the admission area are defined in the admissions document.

The deadline for consultation on any revised Policy for 2020 has now passed (it was the 20th December), so one must assume that there is no change. The school is only obliged to consult on their Policy every 7 years if there are no changes to it.

They have also published the 2020 test arrangements, so that points to "no change" in the Admissions Policy as well.

Either that, or they've forgotten to consult ... it wouldn't be the first school to do that!
