The exam hasn't changed back to GL.

Maths has been GL for many years, including all the time the VR was CEM.

Before CEM, SW Herts used a VR provider whose questions had either leaked, or been collated over the years by certain tuition centres. As a result, many DC's got very high marks.

This wouldn't matter if the marks were standardised for each year's cohort. But in the past they used a pre-existing standardisation chart, so the increasingly high raw scores led to a lot of VERY high standardised scores - with the cutoff marks for some of the consortium schools being in the 250's!

I don't know if CEM re-standardised every year. Even if they didn't, the lack of advance knowledge of the questions meant that the standardised scores were much lower from 2015 onwards.

I've read on a N. London thread that GL do standardise each cohort separately. If this is the case, we shouldn't see a return to the very high standardised scores of 5 years ago, even if the raw scores are higher than CEM.
