Maths nfer 11C question help please

Post by Sharky »

Sorry I do not know how to work this out easily. I am sure I could work it out eventually but there must be an easy method. If you would kindly help.

Test 11C question 14

Which fraction has the largest value?

7/8 3/4 6/9 10/12 3/5

DC can automatically dismiss a couple of the answers but after that we got stuck

Many thanks

None greater than one so closest to one?

The full method is to convert them all to the same fraction or a decimal?

A short cut is to whittle down the choices?

Start with 7/8, eliminate 3/4 (6/8.),

6/9 (is 2/3) eliminate,

10/12 is 5/6 eliminate

3/5 is way off the mark, eleminate?

So largest value is 7/8?

In this case (because of the time factor) I would tell a child to quickly cancel down any that they can.

This leaves 7/8, 3/4, 2/3, 5/6, 3/5.

They should then see by imagining them that 7/8 is the biggest.

You may also need to do work looking at what fractions "look like" - e.g. cake sliced up is probably the best. He will then quickly see from this that 7/8th is the biggest - cake sliced up into eight with one piece missing.

This is a relatively easy question if you have a "feel" for fractions which could quickly be gained by using the cake idea.

Good luck.
