Catchment areas for Kent grammar schools...Do they exist?

Do they exist or the grammar schools admit kids purely on test results and only in the event of oversubscription they will look at where the kid lives? Can someone from Chislehurst area apply for a school ,lets say, in Tonbridge? Thansk a lot

Most grammars in Kent DO have Catchment areas except for the West Kent Superseletives.

Judd, Skinners and Tonbridge dont have catchments but if you are Out of County you may need slightly higher scores for Tonbridge.

Which schools did you have in mind?

We live currently in Chislehurst (which is Kent), so schools like Judd, Skinners, Dartford grammar, St Olaves will cover our area. But we rent a house so we are kind of free to move anywhere, just to be in the area with good schools (and to be in their catchment area). We also want to make sure that if my son does not get into any grammar school, we have have a normal secondary school and we will be in the catchment area of this school...

If those are the schools you are looking at, they dont have a catchment but your son need to get almost full scores in the Kent test. This is around 75% in each paper. Dont know much about Dartford.

Kent grammar schools will take anyone in the UK who passes the Kent test if they have spaces. However, in practice, most of them are oversubscribed. With a few exceptions (mainly in NW and W Kent and including those already mentioned) priority is given in the oversubscription criteria to children who live within the KCC 11+ area. It is not, therefore, possible to live in catchment for a comprehensive school and be in the priority area for those grammar schools that admit on the basis of where candidates live. Details of admission criteria for individual schools (and a vague map of the 11+ areas) is in the admissions booklet on the KCC website.

Darick Wood is a comprehensive school for example. You can live in this area and still try to get in one of Kent school, like Judd. If you are not getting into Judd than you still have a choice to get into Darick wood. Am I right? Thanks a lot

Yes you are correct.

Judd and Skinners will both take boys from your area and your chances of a place are unlikely to be improved by moving house.

Other boys' grammars such as TWBGS and the Maidstone grammars will give priority to boys from the Kent 11+ area, so your son is less likely to get a place at those schools.

Your son will need a higher score in the 11+ to go to Judd/ Skinners than is required by TWBGS or the Maidstone grammars. A bare pass will not get him a place at Judd or Skinners, whereas if you lived in the right place it would get him a place at one of the other Kent grammars.
