Someone asked me today what the maximum score for the 11+ exam in Kent was and I suddenly thought, I don't know. The most I ever hear is 420. Is this the highest score given regardless of your actual test result? or is it possible to score higher? Thanks!

That's is correct - 420 is highest achievable mark but how it is made up is still a complete mystery to me!

Yes max score is 420. 140 for each paper. This does not have to be 100% however. Someone more clued up than me can probably explain it in an intelligent way.
I know last year it was a cumulative thing and you had to get a total of 360 with no less than 117 in any one paper.
So 140 140 116 was deemed unselective but 122 121 117 was selective.

140 is the highest standardised score
3 * 140 =420

This is taken direct from the Judd website:

"The score required varies from year to year and from test to test and adjustments are also made for a student’s age; however around 75% correct answers on each test will usually secure a place (this equates to a near maximum standardised score of 140 on each test). Last year the entry line was at 415 (eg 140, 140, 135)"

Hope this helps.

The scores are based on the normal curve with the extreme ends being removed. The central point (at the top of the bell shape) is where the majority of children taking the test fall. This means that 140 will probably not represent 100%.

I find the standardisation an oddity. DS1 scored full marks in a maths paper (eg. 60/60) giving 140, however as he is one of the eldest in the year he was given 99%, or I can only assume this is why it wasn't 100%?!?!?!

i thought that 140 equated to about 75% of answers correct not 100% ot 99% - did they give you his raw score for that paper tracy? :)

Thanks for all your answers.

T12ACY - how did you find out his actual test results? I always assumed you were only given his standardised scores.

After you get your child's score, email the admissions team at KCC and they will let you have the raw scores on each paper. They will be very busy and I and recall it took about a week before I got a response last year.
