The problem with 6th form is that 'cheap' travel is no longer available. Government want our DC to stay in education until end of year 13 but after they finish year 11 they don't get subsidised travel to school. However, if you are on certain benefits you can apply for a grant to meet the cost via the individual school.

So that kind of seems fair - the people that can afford it pay for it? Also 6th formers can get part-time work but because of age it's harder to do that lower down the school unless you do a paper round or babysit for friends. Surely stumping up a bit for travel (if one can afford it) isn't going to make the difference between continuing with education in the 6th form or starting out unemployed at 16 is it? And if one took the decision to accept a job at 16 instead is that so bad?
