Raw Scores 2012

Post by dottie1974 »

I have received my DD raw score for 2012 - I thought I would post them here to help 2013+ takers for future years, so once you get your childs raw scores please add them too.

DD is a June baby so was 10 year 3 months (just!) when test was taken. Her scores were:

Verbal - standardised 132 raw score 53/80 (66%)

Non-Verbal - standardised 120 raw score 35/72 (49%)

Maths - standardised 130 raw score 30/50 (60%)

If you email admissions (the email on the letter you received from KCC with grammar/high school assessment) with your childs ID number on and specifically ask for raw scores they provide this.

Hope this helps.

I have also received my DDs raw scores today (requested them from KCC last Thursday morning, they are obviously very busy).

Verbal - standardised 141; raw score 73/80 (91%)

Non-Verbal - standardised 141; raw score 62/72 (86%)

Maths - standardised 141; raw score 44/50 (88%)

DD was 10 years 9 months at the time of the test.

What is probably more interesting for future 11+ takers and the sort of information I was looking for but never found, is how this compares to her GL pack results!
We started GL packs in April, took it easy so still had a few practise papers left at the end of the summer holidays.
Math has always been strong for DD so I was happy with that early on and we only did 2 timed test in the last 4 weeks (we did work separately on some of the things which had not been covered at school). Math GL test 7 was 96% and test 8 was 82% so her score was somewhere between the two.
VR results for the last 4 GL tests (all timed); Test 5 = 83.75%, Test 6 = 87.5%, Test 7 = 83.75% & Test 8 = 87.5% so she actually did better on the day.
NVR results for last 3 tests (timed); Test 5 = 86.1%, Test 6 = 80.5%, Test 7 = 82% We didn't do test 8 as DD was getting fed up, but again she scored slightly higher than the average for these test, despite saying afterwards that this was the hardest test (I think due to the timings) and she didn't get to answer the last 3 questions as there was no time warning given.
I hope this information can help future 11+ parents and give some indication of how the GL packs compare to the 'real thing'.

Hi
That is a very interesting comparison, thanks for sharing that.

Another bit of jigsaw is how your DC performs under pressure, a little bit of that is an unknown really. My two eldest are similar on paper in terms of SATs scores and reading ages but the eldest is more emotionally fragile and performed worse at the Kent test, whilst the next one loves a challenge and thrives under pressure. I suppose I should have realised this beforehand but its only recently become clear to me. Hope that helps others to think about 11plus preparation; for some building mental resilience and confidence is as essential as revision.

My sons scores are as follows ....
(Sorry, Not recieved raw scores as yet)

VR ... 139
NVR... 135
Maths ... 119 (Phew)

He was 10yrs and 11 months when sat the test)

I phoned Kcc to ask if there was anything i could do about raising his maths score ... (Possibly re-sitting or by previous work)
Simply because we feel on this particular test, he hadn't shown his full potential. The mock exam the week prior he had 75% raw score .. Which would of bumped him up to near top marks for this paper. Had also acheived far higher marks on previous ones.
Unfortunatly they said that had he of failed then appeals would of been possible ... But because he reached the actual pass mark for the paper, There is nothing you can do to change an individual paper. :( . We are extremely proud of him scoring an aggregate of 393 ... But just wanted to take a chance on asking ... As his previous maths results would of took his scores to the minimum needed for the SS Grammars.
Im so glad he didnt match his mock exam results for Nv ... All prior ones before summer hols, he had been getting 140plus marks ... On the mock one he totally failed it ... Luckily on the actual day, he got the 135 mark. Just shows that a lot of this testing business is down to the circumstances of the day ... Not necessarily how good they are at particular tests. I believe that the majority of these children that are put in for the kent test ... Are more then capable of a grammar education .... Even the guy i spoke to from the Kcc said its mostly down to "luck on the day".

I've received the following information from a lovely lady at KCC.

The minimum score required to achieve 141 for an 11 year old in 2012 was:

VR 64/80 = 80%
NVR 51/72 = 71%
Maths 39/50= 78%

What is interesting is how this compared with the scores required to achieve 140 for an 11 year old in the previous 2 years – which were:

VR: 63 out of 80 (2010), 62 out of 80 (2011) and 64 out of 80 (2012 – max score 141)
NVR: 50 out of 72 (2010), 53 out of 72 (2011) and 51 out of 72 (2012 – max score 141)
Maths: 40 out of 50 (2010), 39 out of 50 (2011) and 39 out of 50 (2012 – max score 141)

Similar scores required each year – despite the 141 maximum score this year.

[In terms of the impact on scores required it doesn’t help. But, as stated before, I think the only thing that really will is getting the number who scored 423 / 422 and 421 to compare with 420 / 419 and 418 last year.]

In relation to how my DS scored in the exam relative to practice papers, he was pretty consistent, getting 85 - 90%. He was marginally better than average in VR and marginally worse in NVR in the exam – but, like Hebo, there was no one minute warning given in the exam, which he had been used to at home.

I think the consistency was because he was so used to doing timed practice papers at home that he wasn’t too worried about the exam. And because he hadn’t done practice papers in silence (deliberately) he wasn’t put off by general noises in the exam either - which was just as well as a couple of the kids had a bit of a meltdown in NVR.

Hope that helps.
