Isn't there also the grammar schools which were not full on march 1 last year to add to the mix?

E.g. Oakwood park for boys, mggs for girls? Fewer offers than spaces so surely would have gone out as far as needed if there was a place requested

Wasn't aware that some grammar schools could be "undersubscribed"...

Why not? If not enough qualified candidates apply for a place to fill the places, then it will be undersubscribed, just like any other school. Even if more qualified candidates than there are places name it on their CAF, it may be that a lot of them are allocated a higher preference.

Toadmum, so after March 1st if you are unsuccessful securing a grammar school place for your DS/DD, technically it could be possible to talk to Kent Council to see which schools have places available?

That would be a possibility, I would think - but is it possible that the schools with places are likely to be in more out of the way places / areas with a longer commute to London, etc? So not necessarily anywhere terribly convenient for where the people without places are, or those people would have considered those schools in the first place? I am rather surprised that a Maidstone grammar school should be undersubscribed, really.

A few years back there was a case of a child in Sevenoaks who was offered a place at The Harvey in Folkestone, front page news in local papers, but possibly a smaller commute than some members contemplate voluntarily for their 11 year olds.

Offered a place as in, got school as a 'non-ranked allocation' (they couldn't be offered any of their preferences, and this was the nearest undersubscribed school), or as in, they named it on their DC's CAF and despite the distance, the place was offered?

TBH I was asking out of curiosity really. Hopefully, my DS will get one option out of the 6 we are putting down!! no Maidstone for us unless we are talking about visiting Leeds Castle!

Offered in the case of, none of the schools they had requested were allocated, for various reasons, catchment, score , eligibility.

Presumably they were Kent CC residents and Kent allocates a nearest grammar place to a 'grammar' assessed applicant if one available, not just the nearest place of any description. If one were applying for Kent schools from another LA, the NRA would be the nearest school with places within that LA, not an alternative, undersubscribed grammar school in Kent. Or any of the other areas where the applicant had named a grammar school they could not be offered.
