TW boys grammar offers

Post by Fmmg »

I'm interested as to how far out the TWGSB offers went on offer day this year.

I'd also like to know how it works site allocation:
If you do receive an offer on offer day, does it tell you which site that offer is for?
If not, and you then have to specify a site preference, is it weeks, or months, before you find out which site you have been allocated?
Do offer day offerees get first dibs on site selection so you have to keep your fingers crossed that there are enough places at your preferred site for you to get the site you want/ need?

We are in the situation where one site is clearly preferable and accessible over another, so we would not want to name TWGSB as our first choice on our form (for Sept 2023 entry) if there is a chance that we would be offered a place there but are then allocated the 'wrong' site, as this would mean that we have missed out on a place at our conveniently placed, but less preferable second choice school and would be left with a place at our preferred school but at the wrong site.

Any insight would be appreciated.

How places are allocated (the process) is on the school website:

September 2022 entry

The pupil admission number for Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys for September 2022 is 300, comprising 210 spaces at the Tunbridge Wells site and 90 places at the Sevenoaks site. If you wish your son to be considered for a place at TWGSB you will need to name us as a preference on your Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF). You can name TWGSB only once, and you are not expressing a preference for either the Tunbridge Wells or the Sevenoaks site at this stage. Even with the additional capacity at the Annexe in Sevenoaks, we remain one school and parents are unable to specify which site they would prefer.

We will rank all successful applicants of the Kent Test who name us as a preference and who have been offered a place against our Oversubscription Criteria. KCC will offer us 300 pupils for National Offer Day and at that point we will allocate places by distance to either the main Tunbridge Wells or the Sevenoaks site. Where it is possible we will then offer students the nearest site to their home address. We will only allocate site places once we have the list of boys to whom we are going to offer a place.

Thanks, I had read this, but was unclear if "KCC will offer us 300 pupils for National Offer Day and at that point we will allocate places by distance to either the main Tunbridge Wells or the Sevenoaks site. Where it is possible we will then offer students the nearest site to their home address. We will only allocate site places once we have the list of boys to whom we are going to offer a place" means that the offer will say which site is being offered.

Anyway, it seems as I thought parents must take a punt on getting offered the site they need.

If we get an offer at the school for the site which we cannot easily get to, we have then missed out on our back up, local second choice comprehensive school. Very worrying potential situation.

My son got into TWGSB this year. We were offered a place at the school as a whole in the first instance and then a few days later, given a campus. At this point we were also given the chance to put in for a campus swap.

We were given TW and asked to swap to Sevenoaks and we’re granted that swap alongside 2 other boys from our primary school.

Allocations are all done in distance - the 90 boys closest to the Sevenoaks campus first and then everyone else offered. At first, the distance from the Sevenoaks campus was 2.3 miles. (We are 4.3 miles)

Hope that is helpful.
