CGP Practice Test Papers GL Kent Test

Post by ciaowood »

Hi all, my daughter has tonight completed one of the VR and NVR tests from the CGP book - it says in the book that they should be aiming for 85% - she's not far off of it but was just wondering whether, to actually pass the 11+, the pass mark is seriously that high? She will be completing the maths/English test tomorrow and will obviously change the overall % of the test but generally speaking... Thanks.

The basic pass marks for the last two years are here:

As you can see, there is considerable variation from year to year.

The following free papers are the nearest thing to the Kent Test.

Which school are you interested in? That will affect what mark is required.

Thanks Sparklecat, very interesting. We are in Medway but will take the Kent test for the Chatham grammar.

Best practice for the Kent test are the 8 GL papers in each subject plus find yourself a vareity of spatial reasoning material from elsewhere both 2D and 3D.

Raw scores to pass are much lower than that so essential not be phased by a feeling that one is getting quite a few wrong - but once they did make the English too easy so it was essential to get way higher percentage correct to pass than in the other subjects.

If you're practising with matieral where she consistently gets 85% and above at this stage it means that either she is going to do exxtremely well and no further work is needed really or that the material is too easy.

The GL practice papers are intended to be familiarisation with all the different question types and give a reasonable amount of practice in each type if you do all 8 papers in each subject. But they do not show you the difficulty of any individual paper - some are much harder than others so the idea is to learn from them, not get hooked on the score your child gets.

If she's getting 85%, I would concentrate on exam technique, filling in the answers correctly and speed.

Possibly - but we don't know what hte "CGP" book is. For an exam in September, at this point we were trying to get through all 32 GL papers more than once before the real thing. We were aiming at high score and it worked. But CGP cannot rip off GL questions - they'll get done for copyright.

Thanks both for your good advice and info. She's not quite getting the 85% as recommended, 75-80%. I've now printed the familiarisation papers, which are fab, and will continue to use those (thanks).

We've got the spacial reasoning tests within the Letts CEM book (for Medway) so are working on both, especially for the timing but also, sadly, to get her used to not being disheartened by not being able to answer them all and, even if she does, they won't all be right!

Roll on October...!

Thank you.

Great - I'm not familiar with the papers that can be printed off. Is that all 8 in each subject?

No, there are just 2 for each subject that are free.

Our GL practise results were very similar to the actual test. So if you are getting those results it all looks good. If you photocopy the answer sheet before use, you can pass the books onto someone else after. Those who buy them early in the year, can always repeat a test later to monitor progress.
